A £160,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme on Dublin Road, Castlewellan will commence on Monday 8 March 2021.
The works will extend for a distance of approximately 0.8 kilometres along the edge of Lough Island Reavey.
Minister Mallon said:
“This much needed investment in the
Castlewellan area will significantly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of road for all who use it. In advance of phase two commencing I would like to thank those who work and live nearby for their continued cooperation throughout these works.”
To facilitate these works, and the completion of phase one which has been ongoing since January, it will be necessary to operate a road closure from its junction with U214 Market Road to its junction with U219 Bog Road from 9.00 am to 4.30 pm each day from Monday 8 March 2021 to Saturday 10 April 2021. During these times delays are expected. The road will be open on Sundays.
When the road closure is operational, diversionary routes will be in place as follows:
Newry and Rathfriland bound traffic will be diverted via Bann Road - Castlewellan Road - Ballyward Road - Dromara Road - Tirkelly Hill Road - Ballyroney Road - Dromore Street - Main Street Rathfriland - Downpatrick Street - Castlewellan Road.
Castlewellan bound traffic will be diverted via Castlewellan Road - Hilltown Road - Kilkeel Road - Bryansford Road - Ballyhafry Road - Newcastle Road and Main Street Castlewellan.
Local access for residents and emergency services will be maintained at all times.
The Department has carefully planned these road works and associated traffic management arrangements in order to minimise inconvenience to the public. Road users are advised to allow extra time for their journey and to follow the alternative routes which will be clearly signed on the approaches to the closure.
Completion of the work by 10 April 2021 is dependent on favourable weather conditions. The Department will keep the public informed of any change. All work will be carried out in line with current public health and health and safety advice, with safe systems of working in place for staff and contractors.
