Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) has been the subject of a number of inquiries, consultations and reviews in recent years, including the predecessor Committee's 2018 sexual harassment inquiries (in the workplace, public places, and everyday experiences), 2016 inquiry into sexual harassment and violence in schools, and the Home Affairs Committee’s inquiry Violence Against Women and Girls.
This inquiry is a separate programme of work, focussing on the areas where the
Committee feels it will be able to add value. The Committee has already been informed through a literature review conducted by its panel of specialist advisers and an Area of Research Interest (launched jointly with the Home Affairs Committee) which draws on ongoing research on VAWG. The Committee also hosted a round-table event with stakeholders in the industry and conducted a rapid online survey. You can find out more about the specialist advisers contributing to the inquiry here. The Committee will divide the inquiry into several strands of work. Beginning in Spring 2022, it will hear oral evidence on the impact that exposure to pornography has on attitudes towards women and girls. This was highlighted as a key issue of concern by expert stakeholders and the public.
The Committee will then focus on a number of other topics, including but not limited to misogyny in music and sport and sexism in educational settings. Keep up to date with the latest announcements here.
