Good morning, everybody.
Thank you very much.
The crucial duty of our Government is to make our communities safer, which is what we are doing.
That’s why we put, of the 20,000 police that we promised at the 2019 election, we’ve already put 13,576 on the streets.

But what we’re also doing is making sure that we give everybody the confidence that

‘Wonder Weevil’ released in fight against invasive floating pennywort
Biocontrol released to protect British waterways against invasive non-native plant
In a world-first, South American weevils have been released in England to fight against the invasive non-native species floating pennywort, as part of Invasive Species Week.
An ornamental pond plant originating from North America, floating pennywort has the ability to grow up to 20 centimetres each day, forming dense rafts over our rivers that harm native plant, fish and invertebrate species, through competition and cutting oxygen levels in water. Floating pennywort impedes navigation routes, disrupts recreational activities like fishing and canoeing and exacerbates flood risk.
Since 2011, the Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International (CABI), with Defra funding, has been investigating the potential use of a biocontrol agent for floating pennywort. Following a decade of safety and efficacy testing, South American weevils, Listronotus elongatus, have been released to manage the plant and minimise its

UK Statement at ECOSOC operational activities for development segment

- Delivered on:
- 17 May 2022 (Transcript of the speech, exactly as it was delivered)
Madam President, Secretary-General,
The world is facing a critical juncture. We are significantly off track from achieving the SDGs. At a time when the world should be fully focused on recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic and fighting climate change, almost every UN Member State is now suffering because of Russia’s war. At a time when 43 million people were already one-step away from famine, Russia is blocking the exit routes for Ukraine’s grain. Russia’s appetite for war is taking food off the world’s table and causing energy prices to spiral – hitting the world’s most vulnerable the hardest.
Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals is under serious threat.
Earlier this week the UK released its strategy for international development. It sets
