And after the low-key festivities in 2020, the people of these two counties are aiming to push the boat out and have a proper Christmas this time around for 2021- none more so than the fishing village of Clovelly on Devon's north coast, renowned for its Christmas lights switch-on, which attracts people from across the country to its cobbled main street and picturesque quayside. At the heart of it, the volunteer lifeboat crew rig a quarter of a mile of festoon lights from top to bottom of the village, before erecting an unusual Christmas tree made from ocean rubbish washed up on the seashore. SARAH BEENY’S NEW LIFE IN THE COUNTRY AT CHRISTMAS
1x60’
21st December, 8pm, Channel 4
Production company: Outline Productions
Contact: Mark Ogle
Britain's favourite property expert, Sarah Beeny, her husband Graham Swift and their four boys have all quit their lives in London to start anew in the country. They've bought a semi-derelict former dairy farm in Somerset where, with 220 acres of land available, they're immersing themselves in everything rural life has to offer. It's Christmas, so the family take a break from building the house as Sarah has a grand plan for a tree house inspired by a traditional alpine chalet that will form the centrepiece of their Christmas in the countryside. It's early autumn but already preparations are underway for Christmas - the Beeny-Swift family's favourite time of the year. They're all out in their woods searching for the perfect logs to build their winter wonderland festive tree house. With the new house not yet complete, the tree house will be where they host an early Christmas party for family and close friends. Now that Sarah has a ready supply of honey, she's keen to try to make the honey-based alcoholic drink, mead. So she enlists the help of her brother Diccon to make a batch that she hopes will be an unusual drink for her Christmas party guests. And with the leftover beeswax, Sarah makes a candle for the tree house. The family dig up one of their Nordman Firs to be a potted mini tree in their tree house and, keen to get everyone in a festive mood, Sarah and Graham take Billy and Laurie to a nearby farm which has some very special animals: reindeer; and where the redundant antlers give Sarah an idea for an impressive focal point in the tree house. And with the party being thrown outdoors down by the lake, Sarah's decided to cook the turkey al fresco. But cooking a turkey on a spit isn't easy and after the first attempt goes wrong, can Sarah find a better way? Sarah also arranges some experiences for the boys as part of their Christmas presents this year, based on their love of archery. On the day of the Christmas party, the alpine winter wonderland tree house is revealed in all its glory. Their guests enjoy the mead that Sarah prepared, a hot mulled cider and of course the turkey roasted on a spit over an open fire. Inspired by the arrow-making experience, the boys have prepared a fiery spectacle for the party and attempt to light a floating bonfire on the lake using flaming arrows. And could that possibly be real snow coming down at the end, to really start the Christmas season?
