Competing in the Women’s Synchronised 3m Springboard, Grace Reid and Katherine Torrance were TeamGB’s first divers in action at this summer’s Games.
In what was the first of the diving event on the programme at Tokyo 2020, Reid and Torrance lined up among eight pairings to have secured a place in the competition – the British duo’s place having been sealed in the very same venue, courtesy of a sixth place performance at the Tokyo World Cup in May.
Opening up with the mandatory two required
dives with a dive difficulty of 2.0, Reid and Torrance started brightly to sit in joint third after producing a quality Forward ½ Somersault Pike (401B) in the second round. The Jane Figueiredo and Marc Holdsworth coached athletes continued to hold their place in medal contention with a score of 61.20 for their Forward 2 1/2 Somersaults 1 Twist Pike (5152B), but were penalised for a sub-par entry on their subsequent fourth round dive which unfortunately pushed them well down the standings.
The pair who were just 0.3 points off a medal at this year’s Europeans rallied for their final dive, a Reverse 2 1/2 Somersaults Pike (305B), to finish on 269.10 points in sixth, as Gold went to the Chinese duo, Shi and Wang, with pairings from Canada and Germany in silver and bronze respectively.
The next British pair to take to Tokyo’s diving boards will be Matthew Lee and Tom Daley, competing in the Men’s 10m Synchronised Platform at 7am BST, Monday.
