The line-up for BBC Radio 1’s Christmas Takeover 2021 has been revealed, with 30 new DJs set to join the station over the festive period.
From Boxing Day until New Year’s Day, the station will be showcasing the best in
new and emerging talent by giving 30 new DJs and presenters a once in a lifetime opportunity to broadcast on the UK’s biggest youth radio station. Many of the presenters have taken an unconventional route to their first slot on Radio 1, including 25-year-old Alexandra Woolhouse, who trained as a solicitor before a career change into broadcasting and will this year become the first trans woman to host a show on Radio 1 daytime. Alex will team up to co-host Radio 1’s Life Hacks with self-described autistic and proud presenter Carrie Morrison, a podcast producer and editor from Worthing. Also among the new presenters are Sweetpea from Watford, who is an NHS worker by day, and a radio presenter, DJ and producer by night; and James Threlfall, who is a professional skateboarder alongside being a presenter, podcaster and DJ.
Many of the presenters began their presenting journeys in student, local, community or hospital radio, including Angelle Joseph from BBC Radio Suffolk, Ifan Davies from BBC Radio Cymru, and Phoebe I-H from BBC Radio Scotland; Liam Daly and Chess Warren from University Radio York; and CassKidd, Laughta, and Lashawna Stewart, who have each hosted shows on south London-based community station Reprezent Radio.
Photos and biographies for all 30 presenters can be found here.
Alex Woolhouse says: “I’m so excited to join the list of iconic BBC stars I’ve always looked up to, like Nigella Lawson, Bimini Bon Boulash and Fleabag; I’m honoured to be in the same sentence as them. Even if I wrote that sentence. Ah well! I grew up listening to Radio 1 in the car going to and from school so I can’t wait for you to hear all I’ve learned and how I Hack Life on Boxing Day.”
Carrie Morrison says: "This is honestly a dream come true. I’d like to thank my dog for his emotional support, and I will certainly bring a photo of him to the studio. Can’t wait to bring some fun, festive, fabulousness!"
Emma Millen says: “I’m buzzing to bring some Geordie energy to Radio 1 during the festive period. I am super proud of being a North East lass and to be given this opportunity to do what I love, have a laugh and be me on such a massive platform, it’s a dream come true. This has proven to me that it doesn’t matter where you are from… you CAN do it!”
Ifan Davies says: “Getting the chance to present on Radio 1 is absolutely surreal. I’m really excited to share some of my favourite chilled out tunes with the listeners over Christmas. Doing so covering for Sian on the Power Down Playlist, as a fellow welsh presenter, makes it even more special! Diolch Radio 1.”
Lashawna Stewart says: “I’m beyond excited to be presenting a show on Radio 1 during the holidays, I’ve been listening to Radio 1 and 1Xtra for many years so this is truly a dream come true. I’ll be bringing the best sounds from our native artists and those across the ponds!”
Maia Lowerson says: “Eee look at me putting Washy on the map! My heart's full of love & excitement to be doing Future Sounds, not just for me (although I'm low-key buzzing) but because it's amazing to be able to highlight the very best female/nonbinary & regional artists. Feeling so blessed!”
Nat O’Leary says: “This is an absolute dream come true! I’m SO excited to be joining Radio 1’s Christmas Takeover, when I tell you this was number 1 on my vision board I’m not lying! I cannot wait to get started.”
Sweetpea says: “After being a regular listener of the show, starting back with DJ Flight on 1Xtra, I am so gassed to be covering! It’s so surreal! I’m renaming it the D&Pea show and expect nothing less than the full 360!"
Aled Haydn Jones, Head of Radio 1, says: “Since its launch in 2019, Radio 1’s Christmas Takeover has grown into a powerful catalyst for boosting the careers of new and emerging presenters and DJs right across the industry. Radio 1 has long been dedicated to supporting the best emerging talent from across the UK, with initiatives like Radio 1’s Residency and Radio 1’s Brit List dedicated to bringing emerging presenters, DJs and artists into the spotlight. Radio 1’s Christmas Takeover launched in 2019, giving 35 new DJs and presenters a chance to host a show on the station over the festive period, followed by a successful second round in 2020. The initiative provides a valuable springboard for emerging presenters working to carve out careers in national radio, with many of the guest presenters going on to achieve major successes across the industry.
Applicants for Radio 1’s Christmas Takeover have the chance to follow in the footsteps of the station’s current roster of DJs including Greg James who started out presenting on student radio before joining Radio 1, and Clara Amfo, who started her career as an intern in radio. A number of former guest presenters have even landed permanent slots on Radio 1, including Sian Eleri, current host of Radio 1’s Chillest Show and Radio 1’s Powerdown Playlist; Dean McCullough, who hosts lunchtimes Friday - Sunday; Sarah Story, host of Radio 1’s Future Dance; and Victoria Jane, host of Radio 1’s Future Soul. This year Radio 1 launched a brand new uploader for the Christmas Takeover, which will be now be reopening as Radio 1’s Up and Coming. The uploader will now allow emerging talent to submit their work year-round for Radio 1 teams to hear, with presenting opportunities on the station for the very best new voices from across the UK.
