Safety Tech 2021: Unleashing the potential of a safer internet

DCMS has today announced the agenda for Safety Tech 2021, a world-first Expo event to showcase how technology can be used to support safer online communities.

The free Safety Tech Expo, which will be hosted

on the CogX platform on Wednesday 24 March 2021, features more than 30 industry-leading speakers from many of the world’s most iconic brands.

The Expo will set out a compelling vision for how technology can be used in a positive way to create value for brands and safer online experiences for users, by helping companies detect and address potentially harmful content or behaviour.

The agenda for ‘Safety Tech 2021: Unleashing the Potential for a Safer Internet’ will include:

  • Keynote speeches from US Presidential Innovation Fellow Clara Tsao and from Julia Cordua, CEO of leading Safety Tech company Thorn;
  • Hany Farid, inventor of revolutionary safety technology PhotoDNA, in conversation with UN Assistant Secretary-General Michèle Coninsx and DCMS Director-General Susannah Storey;
  • Contributions from senior executives from many of the world’s leading brands, including LEGO, Match, Meet, YouTube, EA, Roblox, Riot and Yubo;
  • Senior government executives including Oliver Dowden, DCMS Secretary of State and Simon Saunders, Director of UK online harms regulator Ofcom;
  • CEOs from world-leading safety technology companies, including Two Hat, Crisp, Sentropy, Spectrum, Netclean and SafeToNet.

The event will also give attendees the chance to meet the people behind some of the world’s leading coalitions for online safety, including WeProtect, the Global Internet Forum for Counter-Terrorism (GIFCT), Fair Play Alliance, Technology Coalition and UK Online Safety Tech Industry Association OSTIA.

Safety Tech 2021 will reveal how technology can be used to help companies tackle the growing levels of toxicity that see one in five people abandon online games and social platforms. This can include hate speech, disinformation, grooming, harassment and advocacy of suicide or self-harm. It includes sessions aimed at CEOs, technologists, designers, marketing leads and regulatory compliance leads.

Sponsored by the UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and Department for International Trade (DIT), the event adds further momentum to the growing global cross-sector movement for online safety.

Tickets for this free event, which takes place on Wednesday 24 March at 15:30 - 18:00 GMT can be found on the CogX website.
