What opportunities are available?

Loans and secondments

Loans and secondments are types of placements which can last for varying periods of time. They are a great way to experience a new role, develop skills in a new area or department and can span both inside and outside the Civil Service.

Loans and secondments are usually advertised on Civil Service Jobs, please subscribe to our Opportunities page to receive notifications for any specific opportunities promoted across the AF.

Our professions arrange annual external secondment programmes including the annual Government Statistical Service (GSS) BBC secondment. 2022 will be the sixth year that the GSS has collaborated with the BBC to offer professional development secondments to experienced analysts with four exciting opportunities starting in January next year.

Analysis Function (AF) Coffee Connect

An informal networking opportunity, AF Coffee Connect is a great way to meet analysts and build your network to broaden your understanding of working as an analyst across government. Each month participants are matched randomly and conversations held over coffee. Email analysis.function@ons.gov.uk to sign up.

Analyst, HM Treasury, based in Darlington. Closing date 7 November 2021.

Five Analyst roles are available at Range D, Higher Executive Officer and Senior Executive Officer equivalent. Sitting at the heart of Government, HM Treasury have provided advice on economic policy and decisions that affect the public finances throughout the country’s history.

Analyst roles will suit flexible and motivated individuals looking to apply evidence from data and analysis to different topics, with the aim to inform and shape policy in some of the biggest issues facing our economy. Candidates should have strong analytical capabilities, excellent collaboration skills and an ability to work at pace.

Delegated Grades Cross Government Expression of Interest - Supply Chains Unit, Cabinet Office, six month loan.

The Supply Chains Unit is a new and high-performing unit, set up within the Cabinet Office and focused on a key Government priority. It will focus on immediate challenges facing supply chains as well as the medium-term work to make the UK’s supply chains more resilient.

The Unit is made up of teams spanning the secretariat for a Ministerial committee, cross-Whitehall coordination, policy, strategy, private office and business support, analysis, data acquisition and visualisation, and business intelligence.

This unit is doing top priority work on a political priority. It is fast-paced and high-profile, and will require you to get up to speed quickly on emerging and longer-term issues in order to provide quality advice to Ministers at pace.

Supply Chains Unit Cell, Department for Transport

The Supply Chain Cell require three Grade 7 analytical leads in Statistics, Economics and Modelling for six to nine months posts.

You will work with the National Economic Recovery Taskforce - Logistics secretariat, co-ordinating the Department’s contribution across all transport modes to address issues facing the UK’s supply chain. The opportunity is open for temporary promotion or level transfer.

Data Science Campus MDataGov module

The Data Science Campus is proud to be sponsoring 50 students on one-off MDataGov Continuing Professional Development (CPD) modules. Modules will be run by partner Universities between January 2022 and March 2022. This sponsorship is available to all public sector employees and students will be sponsored on one of the modules specified on the sponsorship application form.

If you would like to be sponsored by the Data Science Campus on one of these modules, please complete and submit the MDataGov CPD module sponsorship application form by 5pm on Friday 12 November 2021.

In the event that a high number of applications are received, priority will be given to applicants who are unable to receive funding from their organisation to complete an MDataGov module during the 2021/22 academic year. For any questions, please email Debbie.Cooper@ons.gov.uk.

Systems Thinking Level 7 Apprenticeship Opportunity, starting in January 2022.

A new two-year, blended approach apprenticeship, delivered by University of Exeter, has been designed for the public service to improve the quality and use of evidence-based scientific advice to government. It will help you to understand how systems thinking methods can complement evidence-based approaches and are integral to the success of policy making in modern government.

This apprenticeship will provide you with an awareness of applying systems approaches to complex multi-partner problems; and through two strategic problem focused work-based projects, provide you with an opportunity to deliver impact within your department and to develop long-lasting, collaborative relationships across government.
